Officer Specialist School’s motto is ‘Dare to Dream’ and on Monday 4 September five students will learn that dreams really do come true, thanks to a special presentation by Variety – the Children’s Charity.

The students will each receive an iPad which will allow them to better engage with their teachers and peers, as well as allowing them to have influence and control over their environment, rather than having to just accept what happens around them.

The life-changing pieces of equipment will be loaded up with the LAMP Words for Life application. It is a full English vocabulary application designed for non-verbal individuals that encourages language acquisition through motor planning principles. It helps provide a consistent motor pattern for words and a systematic way for students to develop communication skills allowing for unlimited language growth opportunities.

When asked about the presentation Variety CEO Janette Connolly said,

“We are delighted to assist these students with their learning and development and we hope the devices will also help to improve interpersonal communication for them,’

Officer Specialist School is a new, purpose built facility servicing the needs students aged between 5-18, with mild to severe intellectual & associated disabilities, in the shires of Cardinia and Casey.

The iPads will allow the students to extend their learning beyond the classroom and into their homes. Consistent use of the LAMP Words for Life application via the iPad has shown to improve dexterity, finger isolation and strengthen fine motor skills.

Variety currently has a Grant Round open and encourages both organisations and individuals to apply. Applications close on 4 October 2017.
