TEN Queensland tourism businesses and events from all corners of the state have been celebrated for their commitment to excellence, receiving Gold, Silver and Bronze accolades at the tourism industry’s national premier awards, the Qantas Australian Tourism Awards.

Queensland’s three Gold, four Silver and three Bronze award-winning tourism businesses were announced on Friday 23 February at a glittering Gala Ceremony held at the spectacular, new Optus Stadium in Perth.
The award winners were among a group of 25 Queensland finalists that each received Gold in their respective categories at the 2017 Queensland Tourism Awards, the state’s most prestigious industry recognition program hosted by the Queensland Tourism Industry Council (QTIC) and presented by Queensland Airports Limited in partnership with Tourism and Events Queensland.
Australian Tourism Awards Chair, Daniel Gschwind said the calibre of finalists from across the country was exceptional. “It was a fantastic night to be a Queenslander,” Mr Gschwind said.
“We have certainly cemented our reputation for hosting outstanding events with the Toowoomba Carnival of Flowers taking home gold for the second year in a row and Mount Isa Rotary Rodeo again shining the national spotlight on Outback Queensland picking up silver in the festival and events category.”
Mr Gschwind said the Whitsundays topped Queensland’s awards tally with three awards including Ocean Rafting who took out the gold award in the Major Tour and Transport category for the second year running.
“The Whitsunday tourism industry should stand tall – it’s been a tough road for many operators in the region and their hard work and commitment has not only been inspiring but is certainly paying off with Ocean Rafting, Cumberland Charter Yachts and BIG4 Adventure Whitsunday Resort on taking home respective gold, silver and bronze awards.”
An exciting story from this year’s awards was the announcement of gold in the Standard Accommodation category, which was presented to Grand Hotel and Apartments Townsville.
“Grand Hotel and Apartments Townsville took out a silver award at the 2016 Queensland Tourism Awards, gold in 2017 and now gold at the Australian Tourism Awards – it shows hard work and persistence pays off and that a regional tourism operator can be at the forefront of quality and service.”
Mr Gschwind said the common link between Queensland’s 25 finalists is their hard work and dedication to providing quality tourism experiences.
To become an Australian Tourism Award finalist, a tourism business must first achieve gold status at the Queensland Tourism Awards.
Nominations for the 2018 Queensland Tourism Awards open on 8 March 2018.
