Chinese exports set to grow for Aussie winners of the DHL Export to China Scholarship

The DHL Export to China Scholarship will see four Australian exporters showcase their products to international trade buyers in Shanghai and receive AU$2,500 worth of free international shipping. Gorman / Factory X, Murphy & Daughters, Genie Grips and Flametree Wines named as 2016 winners
The four winners come from a range of industries and include: Gorman / Factory X (fashion); Murphy and Daughters (bespoke bath & body products); Genie Grips (forklift safety products); and Flametree Wines (Margaret River winery).
The DHL Export to China Scholarship prize includes a place on the Export Growth China program run by the NSW Business Chamber, of which DHL is the Official Logistics Provider. This program helps local businesses build awareness and orders in the Chinese market via exposure to major trade buyers.
Gary Edstein, Senior Vice President of DHL Express Oceania, says these four businesses were chosen for their potential to appeal to Chinese consumers. “We had a great response from a range of Australian producers looking to increase their foothold in China. Quality fashion items, homewares and produce are becoming increasingly popular among the burgeoning Chinese middle-class and we felt the four companies chosen are well-placed to capitalise on this.
“Australian exports to China via our network have been increasing by double digit figures for the past few years. As Chinese urbanisation continues, there are massive opportunities for Australian business to appeal to the desire for high grade goods.”
The Export Growth China program enables high-potential Australian businesses to display their products for six months in the Shanghai Showroom inside Asia’s largest international trade mart, ShanghaiMart. Besides offering fantastic exposure to Chinese trade buyers, other benefits include proactive events and buyer matching, Chinese-language product promotions, and an Export Readiness Report providing advice on how to enter a market of almost 1.4 billion consumers.
Sara Cheng, Senior Manager, China Practice, NSW Business Chamber, added: “The China market represents huge potential for Australian suppliers of food and beverages, quality consumer and lifestyle products and other innovative products and services. However it can also be a challenging market given its language and cultural differences, as well as regulatory and other market access complexities.”
The four winners are:
- Gorman / Factory X – Mr David Heeney, Managing Director, Factory X, said: “We are delighted to receive this fantastic scholarship prize. It provides Factory X with a great platform for Gorman to build brand profile and gain exposure in China, the world’s largest economy. This program comes at a good time as we embark on a drive to grow Gorman’s penetration into the Chinese market. Gorman has gone from strength to strength, becoming one of Australia’s most iconic fashion labels and I believe it will be very well-received in China.”
- Murphy & Daughters – Sarah Murphy, Director, said: “We are super excited with this opportunity to be part of the DHL Export to China Scholarship. The timing couldn’t be better. Murphy & Daughters is a small Australian business on the cusp of growing exponentially. We have just had some terrific export wins into the US and other parts of the world and Asia is next on the list. China is a vast and complex market, and can be tricky to navigate, especially for a small to medium business such as Murphy & Daughters. - Flametree Wines – Liz Mencel, Export Sales & Marketing, said: “Flametree Wines is thrilled to receive this scholarship. Whilst we are successfully exporting to other parts of the world, China is a completely different playing field. It is a market strongly reliant on building important buyer relationships; something that requires time, money and business savvy regarding the unique cultural environment. We see the involvement with Export Growth China and DHL as providing a crucial platform for Flametree Wines to launch into this market.”
In addition to securing a place on the Export Growth China program, each winner will be paired with a dedicated DHL Express account manager to offer strategic logistics support on the China trade lane and receive AU$2,500 worth of free international shipping.
