Ensuring the sexual safety of children who are in out of home care presents challenges for carers and care organisations. This event brings together out of home care providers, academics, therapeutic service providers, regulators, policy makers and carers.
Guest speakers:
  • Professor Simon Hackett (UK), who has been central in the development of the UK national guideline for responding to children with problematic or harmful sexual behaviours, will present research findings. His work focus has been on providing care for children vulnerable to sexual exploitation or who may have displayed concerning sexual behaviours.
  • Australia’s Maree Crabbe (AUS) is internationally renowned for her work on the influence of pornography on the sexual development of young people and presents what this may mean for children in out of home care.
  • Dr Kevin Powell (US) a Colorado based Director of a secure residential treatment facility for youth, will outline his strengths-based approach for working with young people.
  • Dr Howard Bath (AUS), former Northern Territory Children’s Commissioner will reflect on whether children are any safer now in out of home care than they were 20 years ago.

About the Conference

ANZATSA's Collaborations in Practice: Sexual Safety in Out-of-Home Care Symposium will be a showcase of theory, practice, innovations and concerns.
The symposium is tailored specifically for all who work in, or are involved in the out-of-home care sector as direct care providers, therapeutic specialists, child protection practitioners, educators, foster carers, kith and kin carers, policy makers and managers.
Attendees will hear from, learn from and interact with the most experienced and well regarded professionals working in this area. Issues emerging from the Royal Commission including eSafety, therapeutic care, child protection, indigenous issues, national and international innovations, education and policy will all be presented.
The Australia New Zealand Association for the Treatment of Sexual Abuse is dedicated to community protection and safety, through the promotion of professional standards, practices and education in sexual abuse prevention, assessment, intervention and research.
ANZATSA is committed to community protection and safety. When considering case management or intervention, we hold the interest and safety of victims and potential victims, as always the priority.
ANZATSA promotes knowledge of statutes and scientific data relevant to the perpetration of sexual abuse.
