Statement from beyondblue Chairman The Hon. Jeff Kennett AC

Today’s announcement the Victorian Minister for Police and Corrections, Wade Noonan, is to take a leave of absence to deal with issues that have arisen as a result of his role should be commended.

No one is immune from experiencing mental health issues and no workplace or profession is exempt.

Chairman of beyondblue The Hon. Jeff Kennett AC congratulated Minister Noonan and Premier Daniel Andrews on the enlightened manner in which they have handled this situation.

“Wade Noonan has admitted to being affected by some of the more personal and human aspects of his job. He has sought time out to get professional help to deal with those matters,” Mr Kennett said.

Premier Andrews’ support for the Minister to take a substantial period of leave is absolutely correct.

Many forms of stress, anxiety and depression, if detected early can be cured.

In fact, a former Prime Minister of Norway, Kjell Magne Bondevik, stood down as Prime Minister for a time to treat his depressive illness, returned to office and subsequently went on to win another election.

“I am also pleased that the leader of the Opposition Mathew Guy is supporting the leave being granted to the Minister,” Mr Kennett said.

“Today an individual’s health has been given a greater priority than the politics of the day.

“Finally, I hope that the Minister who I have come to know over the last year returns to good health and his job as quickly as possible. Mr Noonan is a man of good values with a compassionate heart.

beyondblue wishes Minister Noonan and his family well and hopes for a speedy recovery.”
