Tea service in Australia is set to be revitalized as the Australian Institute of Tea announces dates for the first ever Government Accredited tea course, 22269VIC Course in Tea Sommelier, to be held in Geelong, Victoria on the 12th – 14th October, 2017.

The Course in Tea Sommelier seeks to equip food and beverages professionals, such as coffee baristas, cafe owners, beverage managers and wine sommeliers, with the additional skills to work effectively as tea connoisseurs – providing advice, selection, preparation and service of speciality tea. The course has been developed to increase and promote high quality tea service and tea selection within the hospitality sector.

“For too long tea has been overlooked as a quality beverage within hospitality,” says Sharyn Johnston, Director of the Australian Institute of Tea and developer of the course. “A bigger focus is put on serving great coffee or wine, and when it comes down to tea you often find yourself getting a low quality tea bag in boiling water. This course seeks to prove that there is so much more to tea service, it is a unique and versatile drink that you can serve in so many different ways!”

The 22269VIC Course in Tea Sommelier will be delivered over a 3-day face-to-face workshop, supported with online learning activities, with a duration of around 15 – 20 weeks. The course will consist of three units, VU21606 Research and provide information on specialty teas, VU21607 Provide specialty tea service for customers, and VU21608 Conduct ceremonial tea practices. All of which are adesigned to give students a solid understanding of traditional tea practices as well knowledge and skills to deliver exceptional and modern tea service.
